The Mount Washington Cog Railway is truly adorable, reminiscent of a toy train with brightly coloured exteriors, a locomotive and one single carriage. ![]() The journey terminates at available to Waumbek Station, located in an alpine meadow at 4,000ft with stunning views. While the summit journey is only available in summer and autumn, a special winter journey is also at a reduced rate. ![]() Once at the summit passengers are free to explore the observation deck, Tip Top House and weather museum for one hour, before the train heads back down the mountain to the Marshfield Base Station. Depending on train, the journey time can slightly differ, with biodiesel powered trains climbing the summit in just 40 minutes, while the steam engines have to stop to take on water mid-journey. The total journey time on the Mount Washington Cog Railway is around three hours, round-trip from the base to the summit. Video and information in the Cog Railway Museum is captioned when necessary. We offer a printed script and other written materials for our guests. Our three hour summit round trips are narrated on the up and down mountain legs. We do offer seats toward the boarding end of our coaches if space is available– please call 60 ahead of time. If space is available on the coach, we will transport your folding wheelchair on the train, or we can provide one of ours for your use at the summit. ![]() Mobility-impaired guests must be capable of transferring from their wheelchair– by themselves or with assistance from others in their party– to their assigned seat on the coach. However, our passenger coaches are historic in design, with three steps up to the boarding deck, narrow aisles and doorways. Marshfield Base Station is fully accessible, with restrooms in the main and lower lobbies and an elevator providing access to both levels.
